    ROUND Hill Hotel General Manager Omar Robinson, Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort Spa Greenhouse Technician Omar Todd, and Valentine McKenzie, head chef at Couples Sans Souci, were named ‘Hotelier of the Year’, ‘Hotel Employee of the Year’ and ‘Hotel Manager of the Year’, respectively, by the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association (JHTA) at its 51st awards luncheon at the Wyndham Kingston Hotel recently.

    And so, my dears, with love in the air and all, sweet-things, it’s been one fabulous week, and then some! Yesterday proved one very hot Valentine’s Day, with Kingston’s preferred restaurants and eateries humming like a fab beehive!

    It was, however, a fine day for a party, and partying there was aplenty. To begin with, it was a double celebration for Kingston’s reigning first couple of haute chic, style king Kingsley Cooper and his fabulous companion, the doyen of haute-fabulissimo, Romae Gordon, who celebrated her birthday yesterday. Cooper celebrated continued business success.

    The Scream gallery in Mayfair had exhibited the artwork for a month with no complaints from the public. The work is intended as modern depiction of the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan.
    But a Metropolitan police officer who saw the Derrick Santini image from a bus was alarmed.

Prior to his joining the Super-Inclusive resort chain, he was senior vice president of The Myers Group in Nassau, Bahamas, and president, Normandie Hotels Corp., where he managed the re-opening of the Radisson Normandie Hotel. In 1985 and again in 1991, Mehta was assistant to the president at Williams Hospitality Management Corp. in San Juan, where he worked on the re-openings of the El San Juan Hotel and El Conquistador Resort.     MAKING MERRY ALONG THE NORTHCOAST
    If there is one time of year that majority of the northcoast hotel workers look forward to, it is the period when they get a chance to have fun and receive great gifts and awards at their annual staff parties.
    Traditionally these parties involve dining, entertainment, presentation of outstanding awards and partying.
    Scanning the northcoast, it was noted that budgetary constraints affected the outlook of some parties this year. In two noticeable instances, the parties were held on the hotel compound unlike other years when spaces were rented for these events.

    There’s a new chef at the Ritz Carlton whom some of you might have met at the recently concluded Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards. The good news is that not only is he back here “to stay”, but Lee Goble now buys sausages from Table Talk exhibitor Chris Hamilton of Hamilton’s Smoke House Ltd.

    Thursday Food takes this opportunity to not only welcome him officially to Jamaica, but to introduce him to our readers.

    My dears, there’s nothing that unites the people of the Caribbean as cricket. And in recent years, there has been lots of innovation to the art of enjoying the sport!

    First, there was the addition of the mound, a concept designed primarily to engage the younger generation of potential West Indian fans. And then there were the corporate boxes – to some another sign of what was wrong with the game. To many, the boxes represented a bygone era of stuffy fuddy-duddies, more interested in profiling and recounting stories of the good old days, far removed from reality and trapped in theperceived glory of yesteryear.

    With the advent of the mound, and its huge success as a stimulus promoting and attracting new interests, the approach to the game, vis-à-vis the manner and environment in which fans come to enjoy same, must move from the desultory to the participatory, albeit still vicariously! With this in mind, corporate Jamaica invested in boxes at Sabina Park, with a view of infusing new and exciting life for those whom it fêtesduring cricketing season.
